Christmas Computers 4 Kids

Computer Mentors, along with huge assists from the Tampa Bay Lightning Foundation and Microsoft Corporation, will host its 4th Annual Christmas Computers for Kids giveaway. This year’s goal is to provide computers to 50 low-income families with school aged children.

Those selected will receive computers with the Microsoft Windows XP Professional operating system, Microsoft Office 2003 Professional with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Outlook, and Publisher, and Microsoft Student which includes Encarta and Microsoft Money. Additionally, each computer will be installed with Microsoft Windows Defender spyware protection, Grisoft AVG Anti-Virus, Adobe Acrobat Reader, and Juno Internet access.

Monetary donations and Pentium III computers are being accepted, however, CRT type monitors, printers, and scanners are not needed at this time. And volunteers are needed to refurbish the donated equipment.

"In order to for the campaign to be a success again, we will need that great support that we’ve received in the past from the community," said Ralph Smith, CMG's Executive Director.

The distribution is being scheduled for Saturday, December 16th, at the St. Pete Times Forum in downtown Tampa. Potential recipients can register by calling the CMG office at (813) 236-1191. To be eligible, families must verify a school-aged child, public assistance status, and affirm that there is no computer currently available in their home.

CMG Announces Volunteers of the Year

Six very special people have been recognized as Volunteers of the Year, for the unbounded generosity and hard work they displayed in making our program better.

The awards were given to honor the dedication and commitment of CMG’s many volunteers. In 2006, volunteers — whether they are board members, tutors or computer technicians — dedicated nearly 600 hours — or the equivalent of $15,000 in labor to Computer Mentors.

The winners were announced at the annual Volunteer Recognition Program on September 26th.

Computer Mentors Volunteers of the Year are: Board Member of the Year, Phil Ashley and Juan Davis (Honorable Mention); Volunteer of the Year, Mark LaPlante and Jason Kerr (Honorable Mention); Hall of Fame Board Member, Dana Holmes-Jenkins; and Hall of Fame Volunteer of the Year, Deborah A. Berry.
