Suncoast Wins Inaugural Tech Bowl!!!

Suncoast Schools Federal Credit Union sponsored the winning team in the Computer Mentors' inaugural Technology Bowl. But everyone who attended Saturday's event walked away a winner.

"Watching those young people digging deep through their technology knowledge gave me a confident feeling that our future isgoing to be in good hands," said guest moderator Andy Hafer, CEO & President of the Tampa Bay Technology Forum. "I am indebted to the all-star team made up of these kids, their parents and teachers, and the Computer Mentors volunteers."

The competition encouraged students to think seriously about technology-related issues through a challenging, game-show format. More than 30 teenagers from public and private high schools throughout the county competed in the double elimination tournament at Hillsborough Community College Brandon Campus.

"The students were well prepared and knowledgeable, and the enthusiastic cheerleading by parents, coaches and volunteers really added to the excitement," said Dave Gussow, former technology editor for the St. Petersburg Times. "The Tech Bowl showed off the best of Computer Mentors' work with students and the community."

Vying for the chance to win new Hewlett Packard laptops were teams of four sponsored by Suncoast, the Times, Amscot, Eastern Florida Financial Credit Union, JPMorganChase, the Lightning Foundation, Now Faith Fellowship Church, and Verizon.

The Suncoast team, coached by Chief Financial Officer Linda Darling, won three rounds in a row without a defeat. Team Faith of Now Faith Fellowship came in second and JPMorganChase's squad placed third with players from both teams taking home a Sony PlayStation Portable.

"I am encouraged and enthusiastic by the incredible start of the Tech Bowl," said Ralph Smith executive director of CMG. "It is a testament to our students' success that we have formed partnerships with such outstanding companies like Eastern Florida Financial Credit Union, JPMorganChase, the St. Petersburg Times, Suncoast Schools Federal Credit Union, and Verizon.

"With this type of community support, I believe the Tech Bowl has the potential to become a premier technology event in the Tampa Bay area."
